The Curvy Girl Cape is a fabulous and flattering cape that is so easy you aren’t going to believe it!
I don’t know about you all but I have to admit I am a curvy girl who loves to crochet but I have found that not all knit wear fabric is flattering for me. However, it is my mission to design items that look great on all body types – not just the size 0s and 2s out there. However, I have to admit – this cape would probably look great on them, too.
This pattern is beginner friendly using the Crossed Half Double Crochet Stitch. I have provided a complete photo and video tutorial for this stitch which you can find HERE. A simple and repetitive stitch pattern which works up quickly.
For this cape I decided upon one of my go-to favorites – Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball*. This yarn has so much drape which helps provide a flattering silhouette. I went up a hook size from the recommended in order to provide even more drape and give it that open knit look. The self-striping yarn does all of the color work for you and with stripes going in the right direction to flatter.

This cape can be worn in different ways – wear the opening to the side leaving your arm free or in the front providing beautiful long points in the front creating a lovely line.

Supplies:
(S,M,L) (2) Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball Graceful Green 7.6 oz / 690 yds
(PLUS) (3) Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball Graceful Green 12.5 oz / 1134 yds
Size K (6.5 mm) crochet hook
Stitch markers
Tapestry Needle
Approximate finished size: S,M,L = 18” x 47” (finished rectangle before adding neck edging) Plus = 22” x 51”
Gauge: 9 rows = 4” / 14 hdc st = 4”
Abbreviations:
ch = chain
hdc = half double crochet
st = stitch
sk = skip
sp = space
hdc2tog = half double crochet 2 together (see special stitches section below)
Notes about pattern:
- Ch 2 at beginning of each row does not count as a stitch
- Main body of cape is worked row by row, creating a large rectangle. Rectangle is folded together with an overlap in the front and the top edging is worked in the round.
- To resize, ch foundation ch in multiples of 2, add or subtract rows to rectangle to make larger or smaller.
Special stitches:
hdc2tog: (Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop) 2 times, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook = 1 stitch decrease.
Row 1: ch 60 (74), hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn (58, 72)
Row 2: ch 2, *sk next st, hdc in next st, hdc in skipped st,* repeat between * * to end. Turn (58, 72)
Row 3 – 94 (103): repeat row 2 until piece measures approximately 47” (51”) long
Finished rectangle size S,M,L = 18” x 47” Plus = 22” x 51”
At the end of final row of rectangle, DO NOT fasten off, fold ends of rectangle together and overlap ends approximately 7” place stitch markers to hold in place.
Neck Edging
Round 1: Turn, ch 2, (work through both thicknesses of overlapped edges for first 7”), hdc evenly around top edge of rectangle, sl st top of 1st st. (approx 164, 184) NOTE: when working hdc evenly around an edge typically you would work 3 hdc stitches at the end of every 2 rows of hdc. However, I ended up with a total st count of 164 for the size (S,M,L). This is a few more stitches than would be recommended with that method but because I used a larger hook than recommended for the yarn it helped to not gather or pull the fabric. Just make sure your 1st round doesn’t get wavy with too many stitches or pull the fabric together with too few. You may need to decrease the number of decrease rounds you complete for the neck edging depending on how many stitches you have. Make sure your neck opening doesn’t get too small! If you eliminate decrease rounds then just substitute with a regular round of crossed half double crochet stitches without decreasing.
Round 2: ch 2, *sk next st, hdc in next st, hdc in skipped st,* repeat between * * to end, sl st to 1st st.
Round 3: (decrease round) ch 2, *hdc2tog over next 2 st, sk next st, hdc in next st, hdc in skipped st,* repeat between * * to end, sl st to 1st st.
Round 4: repeat round 2
Round 5: (decrease round) repeat round 3
Round 6: repeat round 2
Round 7: (decrease round) repeat round 3
Round 8: repeat round 2
Round 9: (decrease round) repeat round 3
Round 10: repeat round 2
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
